Typical installation prices in 2026

How much does it cost to install flooring per square foot?

For the labor alone, an installer typically charges $2 – $5 per square foot for laminate, $2 – $6 for luxury vinyl click planks, $3 – $8 for engineered wood, $5 – $9 for tile and $8 – $15 for herringbone. Removing the old floor, leveling, underlayment and baseboard come on top: a 208 sq ft room in laminate comes to about $850 – $2,350 for the labor and these extras, without the flooring itself.

Installation prices by floor type

Labor only, without the flooring, typical in 2026 across the country. Large cities sit at the top of each range or above it, rural areas at the bottom.

Floor typeTypical range (per square foot)What drives the price
Laminate (click)$2 – $5Floated on underlayment, quick to install; cuts around doors and pipes take most of the time.
Luxury vinyl click planks$2 – $6Installed like laminate, but needs a flatter subfloor; glue-down vinyl costs more.
Engineered wood or parquet planks$3 – $8Floated or glued; glued planks and a wood subfloor that needs plywood first are the upper end.
Herringbone$8 – $15 (estimate)Short blocks set one by one from a center line, every wall row cut; about twice the time of straight planks.
Tile (ceramic or porcelain)$5 – $9Adhesive and grout work; large formats and natural stone cost more, small mosaics too.

Typical extras on a quote

Most quotes add a few of these. They often decide whether a job lands at the bottom or the top of the range.

ExtraTypical priceWhat drives the price
Removing and disposing of the old floor$1 – $3 per square foot (estimate)Carpet is quick; glued vinyl, tile and adhesive residue take longer.
Self-leveling compound, applied$1 – $3 per square foot (estimate)Needed when the subfloor dips more than the flooring allows.
Underlayment, supplied and installed$0.50 – $1.50 per square foot (estimate)Under laminate, vinyl without an attached pad and floated wood.
Baseboard, supplied and installed$2 – $6 per linear foot (estimate)Counted along the walls, minus the door openings.
Transition strip at a door$15 – $40 each (estimate)Where the new floor meets another one; metal costs more than plastic.

These are typical ranges from published price guides and installer rates, not a quote. A range marked as an estimate is our own reading where no guide gives a figure. Many installers have a minimum charge for small rooms, and some quote by the day instead of by the area. Ask whether tax and the removal of waste are included.

What moves the price up or down

  • Room size: a small room costs more per area, because setting up, cutting and cleaning take almost as long as in a large one.
  • Subfloor: a flat, dry subfloor keeps the job at the bottom of the range; dips, cracks or damp add leveling and drying time.
  • Pattern: straight planks are the cheapest; diagonal laying and herringbone add cuts and time.
  • Doors and details: every door frame to undercut, every pipe and every transition adds a few minutes that add up.
  • Furniture and access: moving furniture, stairs and carrying material up floors are often charged separately.

Worked example: a 16 × 13 ft room in laminate

A 208 sq ft living room, one door, the old carpet out, underlayment and new baseboard (55 ft along the walls without the door). Each line is the price range above times the quantity:

  • Labor for 208 sq ft of laminate: $416 – $1,040
  • Underlayment over 208 sq ft: $104 – $312
  • Removing the old floor over 208 sq ft: $208 – $624
  • Baseboard, 55 ft: $110 – $330
  • One transition strip at the door: $15 – $40

Together, rounded: about $850 – $2,350, without the laminate itself.

From price per area to your own total

These prices tell you what the labor costs; what the material costs is a different count. The layout plan with cost lays out your real room, counts whole packs and adds underlayment, adhesive and baseboard at your own prices, and labor per area can go in as its own line. For the quantities alone, the laminate flooring calculator, the tile calculator and the baseboard calculator give the packs and lengths.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install laminate flooring per square foot?
Typically $2 – $5 per square foot for the labor in 2026, without the laminate. Underlayment adds $0.50 – $1.50 per square foot, removing the old floor $1 – $3 per square foot. Small rooms and many doors push the price to the top of the range.
How much does it cost to install flooring in a 208 sq ft room?
About $416 – $1,040 for the labor of laminate in a 16 × 13 ft room, and about $850 – $2,350 with removing the old floor, underlayment, baseboard and a transition strip. The flooring itself comes on top.
Why does herringbone cost so much more to install?
Herringbone blocks are short and set one by one from a center line, and every block at the wall is cut. That takes about twice as long as straight planks, so the labor is typically $8 – $15 per square foot against $2 – $5 for laminate.
Do installation prices differ by city?
Yes. The ranges here are typical across the country; installers in large, expensive cities usually charge the top of the range or more, rural installers the bottom. Ask two or three local installers for a written quote on the same material list.
What is usually not included in the price per square foot?
The flooring, removing the old floor ($1 – $3 per square foot), leveling ($1 – $3 per square foot), underlayment, baseboard ($2 – $6 per linear foot) and transition strips ($15 – $40 each). Moving furniture, stairs and waste disposal are often charged separately too.
