
Anyone laying laminate, parquet or tile needs three numbers before ordering: how much material, how much of it becomes waste, and which pieces get cut. Here's what layout software has to deliver — and how to produce the plan for your own room, free, in the browser.
Create a laying plan free →Most tools stop at multiplying length by width and adding a fixed allowance. A laying plan is worth having only if it survives contact with the actual room:
Area × a 5–15% allowance. Fast, and wrong in both directions: it over-orders simple rooms and under-orders complicated ones, because it never looks at the shape.
Better bookkeeping, same blind spot. A spreadsheet still can't tell you which cut goes where, so the cut list stays in someone's head on site.
Plans the actual courses against the actual outline, so the waste percentage is computed rather than assumed — and the cut list comes out with it.
A flat allowance treats waste as a property of the material. It is really a property of the geometry: the same box of laminate produces very different offcut piles in a corridor and in a square living room. Three things drive it, and layout software is worth having because it can see all three at once.
The first is the ratio of perimeter to area. Every cut happens at an edge, so a long thin room generates far more cut pieces per square metre than a compact one. A 2 m × 12 m corridor and a 5 m × 5 m room cover almost the same area, but the corridor has half again as much wall to cut against.
The second is whether the offcut from one course can start the next. With a straight or offset bond it usually can, provided the piece left over is longer than the minimum starting length the material allows — commonly around 30 cm for click laminate, because a shorter piece has too little tongue left to lock. Below that threshold the offcut is scrap and the waste percentage steps up sharply. A planner that places every plank knows which offcuts clear the threshold; a spreadsheet cannot.
The third is the pattern, and it dominates the other two. A straight bond in a rectangular room typically settles around 5–8% waste. Herringbone and chevron work at roughly 15–20%, because every perimeter tile meets the wall at 45° and both halves of the cut are rarely usable. Choosing the pattern is therefore a material-budget decision, not only an aesthetic one.
Direction is the one input that changes both how the floor looks and how much of it you buy, and it is usually settled on site in ten seconds by habit. It deserves more than that, because reversing it later means reordering.
The conventional choice is to run planks along the longest wall and parallel to the main light source, typically the window wall. That hides the joints, because raking light across a joint casts a shadow line, while light along it does not. It also produces fewer end cuts in most rooms, since long runs mean fewer course ends per square metre.
Structure can overrule aesthetics. Over timber joists, floating floors are laid across the joists, not along them, so the boards bridge rather than sag between them. In a flat with a long hallway feeding several rooms, running the same direction throughout reads as one floor rather than a set of rooms, and it avoids a direction change at every threshold — each of which needs a profile.
The practical way to settle it is to plan the room twice, once in each direction, and compare the two material lists before ordering. The difference is often a pack, occasionally three, and it costs nothing to look.
A plan that only counts material and ignores how the courses are offset produces a floor that is either weak or ugly, and sometimes outside the manufacturer's warranty. The rules are short and nearly universal across click-system laminate and engineered parquet.
The end joints of neighbouring courses have to be offset by a stated minimum — 30 cm is the common figure, 40 cm for long or wide-format boards. Too little offset concentrates load at the joint and lets the locking system work loose. The offset also has to vary: repeating the same offset in every course produces a diagonal stair-step of joints marching across the floor, which is the most visible way to get a technically sound floor wrong.
Two joints in adjacent courses should never align, and no board should end up shorter than the minimum starting length. In practice this means the first board of each course is cut deliberately rather than taken from whatever offcut happens to be nearest.
The most common avoidable defect in a finished floor is a final course two centimetres wide along the far wall. It happens because the first course was laid at full width without checking what would be left at the end, and by the time anyone notices, the floor is down.
The arithmetic is simple enough to do before starting. Divide the room width by the plank width; if the remainder is less than about a third of a plank, take that shortfall, split it, and trim both the first and the last course by half of it. The floor is then symmetrical, the sliver disappears, and the cut edges sit under the skirting where nobody sees them. The same logic applies to tiles, where a sliver at the wall is even more obvious.
Layout software should do this for you, because it is planning both ends of the room at once and can see the last course before the first one is laid. The expansion gap belongs in the same calculation: a floating floor needs roughly 10–15 mm clear at every wall and every fixed object, and rooms over about 8 m in either direction usually need an intermediate movement joint as well.
A finished laying plan produces three documents that do different jobs, and they are worth keeping separate.
The material list is what you order against: whole packs, rounded up, with the underlay area and the perimeter profile lengths alongside. Order the packs in a single batch where possible — shade varies between production lots, and a pack from a later lot is visible in daylight next to the rest.
The cut list is what the fitter works from: each cut piece, its length, the course it belongs to, and which offcut it comes from. Its value is that it removes the decision from the site. When cutting is improvised, offcuts that the plan intended to reuse at the far wall get discarded early, and the computed waste percentage quietly becomes the flat allowance it was supposed to replace.
The plan drawing is what settles arguments: the courses, the direction, the starting line and the perimeter cuts, on the real room outline. Handing all three over before the first board is opened is the difference between a floor that follows a plan and a floor that follows whoever cut first.
