Flooring questions, answered

Is there a free app that makes a laminate layout from a floor-plan photo?

Yes – the Autolay planner is free, runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, and turns a photo of a floor plan into a to-scale laminate layout with the number of planks, every cut and a price estimate.

You do not need a drawing program or a measured survey. A clear photo of the floor plan – from the builder's brochure, the rental listing or a sheet you drew yourself – is enough for the planner to lay the floor. What it needs from you is one length you know, so it can turn the picture into real meters.

The planner also accepts a PDF or image of the plan, a DXF drawing, a 3D scan or an IFC building model, and you can type the room's sides instead if you have no plan at all.

How it works, step by step

  1. Upload the photo. Open the planner and choose the photo of your floor plan (JPG, PNG, WebP and similar). A PDF of the plan works the same way, one page at a time.
  2. Set the scale. Mark one length you know – a wall or a dimension line – and type its value. With two or more marked lengths the planner also corrects a photo that is stretched in one direction.
  3. Pick the room. The planner proposes the room outlines it finds on the plan. Pick the room to be laid, or trace or correct the outline by hand.
  4. Choose the laminate and the pattern. Pick a laminate from the catalog or type your own plank length and width, then the direction, the start point and the pattern: straight, staggered by a half or a third, herringbone or chevron.
  5. Read the result. The planner lays every plank, counts full planks, cut pieces and packs, shows the waste and gives a price estimate. The full plan downloads as a PDF.

What it does not do

  • The result is only as exact as the scale you set: mark the longest length you know, not a short one.
  • A photo taken at a steep angle bends straight walls. Photograph the plan from straight above or use the PDF if you have it.
  • Hand sketches work when the proportions are right; the planner cannot guess a wall length the sketch gets wrong.
  • Without an account, an upload can be up to 50 MB per file.

More questions on this topic

Is there a free app that makes a laminate layout from a floor-plan photo?
Yes. The Autolay planner is free and runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Upload a photo of the floor plan, mark one known length to set the scale, pick the room, choose the laminate and the pattern, and it lays the floor plank by plank with piece count, cuts, waste and a price estimate.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The planner runs in the phone's browser; you can take the photo with the phone and upload it directly.
What if I have no floor plan?
Type the length and width of the room instead. The planner builds the room from those sides and lays it the same way.
Can I download the layout?
Yes. The plan downloads as a PDF with the drawing, the shopping list and the cut list, without an account or an e-mail address.
