What a laminate calculator has to do

Dividing square metres by a pack and adding 10 % gives a number, not an answer. A calculator earns its place only when it turns your real room into real quantities:

• Count the whole planks and the cut planks at the end of each row from the real room shape, then round up to whole packs — not the bare area.
• Compute the waste from the laying direction, because an offset (half-bond) run reuses the offcut to start the next row while a diagonal or herringbone laminate wastes far more.
• Take the plank size, the laying direction and the expansion gap you actually use, and give the matching underlay area alongside.
• Return a cut list: which planks are cut, at what length, and which offcut starts the next row.

Why the pack-rounding number is usually wrong

The area-divided-by-pack estimate

Most free calculators divide the floor area by the pack coverage and add a flat 10 %. It is fast, but blind to the room: it never sees the end cuts, so two floors of the same size can round to different pack counts.

The laying direction changes the waste

A straight or offset run keeps waste low because the offcut from one row starts the next. Lay the same laminate diagonally or in herringbone and the perimeter fills with angled cuts, so the waste climbs.

Why placing each plank is exact

A planner that lays each plank knows exactly which ones are cut and where, so the plank count, the pack count and the waste percentage are real for your room instead of a one-size markup.
